Use Our Label

Make your certification visible. Help customers understand what it covers.

The Friend of the Earth label connects your certified products or services with the standard they meet. Use it on authorised packaging and communications to give customers clear, recognisable certification information they can check.

Whether you are a brand, manufacturer, retailer or service provider, start by confirming your authorisation and requesting the official artwork for your certification.

Who can use the label

To place the Friend of the Earth label on your own-brand certified products, you must hold a valid, signed Audit and Licence Agreement and a valid certificate or authorisation to use the logo.

Your use of the label must relate to the products or activities covered by that authorisation. Purchasing from a certified supplier does not automatically authorise your business to label its finished products.

An authorised business cannot grant another company permission to use the label. Each business should contact Friend of the Earth to confirm the requirements for its intended use.

Not yet certified? Start by applying for the programme relevant to your products or activities.

Get your label ready in four steps

1 Confirm what is covered

Identify the products, ingredients or services you want to promote and confirm the applicable standard, certification status and permission to use the label.

Where certification covers a particular ingredient or component, the label and accompanying wording must make that scope clear.

2 Request the official artwork

Choose the approved horizontal or vertical format for your standard and request the official language version for your market.

Use the files supplied by Friend of the Earth, including the registered trademark symbol ®. Requests for alternative colours, typography or layouts require written approval.

3 Add your FOE ID

Include your assigned identifier in the format FOE ID: 1234.

Position it clearly beneath the label, following the alignment, spacing and minimum character-size requirements in the Logo and Label Guidelines. For a horizontal label, align the ID with the start of the certification wording and website address.

Your FOE ID helps customers find the relevant certification record in the verification directory.

4 Submit your artwork for approval

Send your final packaging or promotional design to market@friendofthesea.org before printing or publication.

Include the complete layout so we can review the label, FOE ID, accompanying wording, size and placement together. Obtain written approval before using the design.

Explain your certification with approved wording

The official label identifies the applicable Friend of the Earth standard. You may also add an approved explanatory statement to help customers understand the requirements behind it.

The Friend of the Earth Official Product Claims Register, available as a downloadable PDF, contains wording for individual standards and the available languages. It provides compact, standard and extended options for different formats.

Choose the wording that matches your certification and use it without changes. Place it close to the label and FOE ID so customers can read the information together.

Additional explanatory wording is optional. If you use it, include it in the artwork submitted for approval.

Using the label across your communications

You can communicate the certification of your authorised products through packaging, product pages, brochures and related marketing materials.

Keep the connection between the label and the certified product or activity clear. On a page displaying several products, position the label so customers can identify which items it applies to.

Use the approved language version for the intended market. Do not translate the label yourself, alter its wording or add unsupported environmental claims around it.

For services, retailer communications or other applications, contact us to confirm the appropriate wording and placement.

Keep your label use up to date

Check that your certification and authorisation remain valid and that your communications reflect their current scope.

Before extending the label to a new product, ingredient, service or market, confirm whether further authorisation or artwork approval is needed.

If your authorisation is revoked, remove the logo within the timescales specified in your Audit and Licence Agreement.
