In a fashion system defined by acceleration, overproduction, and standardisation, Brazilian designer and textile artist Camila Machado proposes an alternative model rooted in slowness, material intelligence, and environmental reciprocity.
Positioned between haute couture, textile art, and ecological practice, her work reflects a wider transformation in the luxury industry, where craftsmanship, traceability, and sustainability are becoming structural values rather than aesthetic choices. Within this shift, haute couture stands out as one of the few systems inherently aligned with more responsible production, thanks to its made-to-order logic and atelier-based structure, which naturally limits overproduction and waste.
Against this backdrop, Camila Machado defines a new language of luxury, based not on excess, but on rarity, process, and the irreproducible logic of nature.
At the core of her practice is botanical printing, a technique that transfers leaves and flowers directly onto silk without the use of chemical dyes. Each piece becomes a singular imprint of nature, an unrepeatable record of time, place, and material encounter.
This approach extends to the use of organic waste, including onion skins, fruit residues, and fish scales, reinterpreted as active design materials. In doing so, discarded matter is repositioned within a circular logic that challenges conventional hierarchies of value in fashion.
Alongside bespoke bridal couture, special occasion pieces, and exclusive commissions, the brand also integrates garment rental, extending product lifecycles and challenging traditional notions of ownership in luxury fashion.
From the Atelier to the Amazon: ALMAzônia
Camila Machado’s vision extends beyond garments through ALMAzônia, an immersive retreat set in the Amazon rainforest designed for brides, artists, and creative practitioners.
Conceived as a space for reconnection, the project invites participants to engage directly with local ecosystems through botanical printing workshops and experiential practices rooted in environmental awareness.
The Friend of the Earth Certification
The brand’s recent obtaining of the Friend of the Earth Sustainable Fashion certification marks a significant milestone, formally recognising a practice grounded in traceability, low-impact production, and artisanal knowledge systems.
Friend of the Earth, a project of the World Sustainability Organization, certifies compliance with strict environmental and social criteria, including supply chain traceability and independent audits.
“For years, I have been developing an atelier practice rooted in natural materials, manual processes, and a deep connection to nature,” says Camila Machado. “This certification represents international recognition of an approach that has always been part of the brand’s DNA and reinforces its integrity.”
The certification has also supported the brand’s growing international visibility, including participation in the third edition of Beyond the Claim, the independent fashion show organised by Friend of the Earth during the days of the Milan Fashion Week, and at the Milano Fashion & Jewels fair, alongside other certified sustainable brands.
A New Definition of Luxury
In Camila Machado’s work, luxury is defined by scarcity, authorship, and connection rather than repetition or abundance. It reflects a broader shift in haute couture and high-end fashion, where value is increasingly measured through process, traceability, and environmental responsibility.
Her practice points toward a future in which fashion is not detached from ecological systems, but embedded within them, transforming the atelier into a site of cultural production and environmental intelligence.
