ampiamente distribuiti attraverso le savane e le foreste pluviali tropicali in Asia, gli elefanti sono i\u00a0pi\u00f9 grandi animali terrestri del mondo. Nel XIX secolo gli elefanti erano circa 10 milioni, ma le loro popolazioni sono drasticamente diminuite con l&#8217;inizio della corsa all&#8217;avorio, che ha ridotto la popolazione a poco pi\u00f9 di\u00a0400 mila individui\u00a0in tutto il mondo.<\/p><p>Negli ultimi anni, gli elefanti hanno subito il\u00a0bracconaggio\u00a0per il commercio illegale dell&#8217;avorio, la\u00a0caccia da trofeo, l\u2019avvelenamento\u00a0e la caccia dovuta al\u00a0conflitto con le popolazioni locali, oltre alla\u00a0frammentazione dell&#8217;habitat\u00a0causata dall&#8217;agricoltura intensiva, dall&#8217;allevamento e dallo sviluppo delle infrastrutture.<\/p><p>La recente soluzione proposta dalla CITES durante la COP17, riguardante la chiusura dei mercati interni, incluso quello cinese, ha portato allo spostamento del\u00a0mercato nero dell&#8217;avorio\u00a0verso paesi vicini dove il commercio rimane non regolamentato. Molti paesi africani, asiatici, europei e degli Stati Uniti si sono opposti al mercato dell&#8217;avorio distruggendo tonnellate di zanne confiscate dalle autorit\u00e0. Tuttavia, tutto ci\u00f2 non \u00e8 sufficiente per smascherare la corruzione e le azioni criminali nascoste.<\/p><p>Il\u00a0turismo\u00a0\u00e8 anche una delle cause del loro declino e del cattivo stato mentale che ne impedisce la reintroduzione. Purtroppo, molte agenzie in Asia permettono ancora ai turisti di cavalcare elefanti catturati nel loro habitat della IUCN, hanno evidenziato che le popolazioni di elefanti africani sono generalmente stabili, con alcune in aumento, ma gli animali rimangono in pericolo a causa della minaccia costante del bracconaggio, della distruzione dell&#8217;habitat e del conflitto uomo-fauna.<\/p><p>Gli elefanti asiatici sono classificati dalla IUCN come in pericolo di estinzione, con popolazioni in continuo
