The two organizations share a mutual aim of protecting the environment by promoting sustainable food<\/i><\/p>\n

The World Sustainability Organization (WSO) and The Good Food Institute (GFI) Sustainable Seafood Initiative today announced that the two organizations have initiated a joint certification program for plant-based seafood. The certification will be part of the WSO\u2019s Friend of the Sea certification program, under a new \u201cGolden Standard.\u201d The Friend of the Sea Golden Standard will help plant-based seafood companies certify their products according to sustainable certification criteria of the WSO\u2019s Friend of the Earth agriculture standards. Plant-based meat products will receive a comparable Golden Certification from Friend of the Earth.<\/p>\n

\u201c Plant ingredients form the entirety of inputs used in the preparation of plant-based seafood,\u201d<\/i> explained Dr. Paolo Bray, Founder & Director of the World Sustainability Organization.<\/b> \u201cOur standard, which is applicable for these products, is based on SAFA (Sustainability Assessment of Food and Agriculture systems) guidelines set by UN-FAO. Intensive agriculture practices contribute to the loss of agricultural and natural biodiversity, degrading ecosystems and causing a reduction in animal and plant species. Such activities are also resulting in increased greenhouse gas emissions, among other concerns . The Friend of the Sea Golden Standard for plant-based seafood will assure consumers that products have been made by adopting sustainable practices without harming the environment.\u201d<\/i><\/p>\n

The collaboration between the WSO and GFI was announced at GFI India\u2019s Smart Protein Summit, and will strengthen the global alternative protein sector. Major food companies and investment agencies are eying this segment and investing in the category. \u201cThe segment\u2019s future is promising and we expect to see large scale investment commitments by the who\u2019s who of the industry,\u201d<\/i> Bray added.<\/p>\n

According to Mr. Amod Ashok Salgaonkar, a WSO International Advisory Board Member & Project Leader of the Plant-based Seafood and Meat Initiative<\/b>, \u201cHaving a globally accepted sustainable certification ecolabel on products will support companies achieving true trust from consumers. It will open more roads for doing sustainable business in the global market. The Plant-based Seafood retail category presently stands at around US $9.4 million, whereas the Plant-based meat retail category is US $939 million\u2014signalling huge potential growth in the near future.\u201d <\/i><\/p>\n

<\/b>The sector has significant room for growth in Asia in particular. \u201cSeafood will be the fastest-growing category of animal protein over the next decade, with a significant proportion of that demand coming from Asia as incomes in the region continue to rise,\u201d<\/i> said GFI India Managing Director Varun Deshpande<\/b>. \u201cThe growth of alternative seafood presents tremendous promise to address this demand sustainably, while simultaneously creating future-proof income for industry incumbents and farmers.\u201d\u00a0 <\/i><\/p>\n

GFI Sustainable Seafood Initiative Manager Jen Lamy <\/b>added, \u201cWe are thrilled to partner with the World Sustainability Organization to give consumers an expanded array of delicious and sustainably produced fish and shellfish. Alternative proteins will play a key role in the growing sustainable seafood movement and this initiative is an important step in solidifying the industry\u2019s growth.\u201d\u00a0<\/i><\/p>\n

Commissioned data from SPINS shows the highest ever growth in sales of all kinds of plant-based food have occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, compared to the same period last year. WSO and GFI are undertaking this program because they believe adopting the International sustainable standards will further boost this growth trend. The WSO\u2019s Sustainable Restaurant Programme will further support companies that adopt the Friend of the Sea plant-based seafood Golden Standard.<\/p>\n

WSO operates globally in the sustainable certification sector with two major projects: Friend of the Sea<\/a> and Friend of the Earth<\/a>. The two certification programs have a presence in 100+ countries. GFI<\/a> works with scientists, investors and entrepreneurs to make ground-breaking good food a reality. One of the mutual aims of both organizations is to protect the environment by promoting more sustainable sources of protein.<\/p>\n

To obtain the certification, companies must meet the following requirements:<\/p>\n

– A well organised environmental management procedure.<\/p>\n

– A system to protect the ecosystem, with implementation of areas dedicated to the conservation of wild flora and fauna.<\/p>\n

– The reduction in the use of chemically synthetic substances according to the principles of organic or integrated agriculture.<\/p>\n

– Biological control, the rational use of water resources.<\/p>\n

– Minimization of mechanical operations on the ground and its compaction.<\/p>\n

– The use of energy from renewable resources.<\/p>\n

– Control of gas emissions, greenhouse effect and the implementation of the systems to reduce them.<\/p>\n

– Social responsibility.<\/p>\n

Friend of the Earth agriculture standards are applicable to certify plant-based meat. Products meeting the standards can be awarded the Friend of the Earth golden logo for plant-based meat if they successfully pass through assessments.<\/p>\n
